Dion Owens greatly values her experience in Tulsa— a city that she finds to be unmatched in its passion for service. In her commitment to a life that prioritizes community building, Tulsa proves to be a continued source of inspiration for Dion and her family. Dion is married to Ray A. Owens, PhD and is the proud mother of two teenage girls.  In addition to working as a physician, Dion serves as the “First Lady” of The Metropolitan Baptist Church—the Church that Cares.  Her love of faith, family, church and community are her true treasure.

Dion obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University and her Doctor of Medicine degree from UMDNJ/Rutgers Medical School.  She holds both of these institutions in high regard and takes to heart Princeton’s call to its students and alumni to live “In the Nation’s Service and the Service of Humanity.” During her college years, one of Dion’s great joys was mentoring a child in a neighboring community through The Big Sister/Little Sister program.  While she was in medical school, Dion was awarded recognition from a community program that tutored high school students.

Over the years, Dion has worked, served and volunteered in a variety of settings. Dion taught preschool and fourth grade in an under-resourced community prior to matriculating in medical school. At “The Met” church, Dion has served in many capacities—including women’s, couples and children’s ministry, worship planning, staff development and community outreach.  One of her most treasured annual projects involves helping her church distribute back packs and school supplies to students in the Tulsa community.  Since the inception of this project, over $60,000 in supplies have been disseminated in an effort to better position Tulsa’s students for educational success.  Dion fervently advocates for the church’s role as an agent for spiritual development and for social justice.

Dion maintains membership in several organizations that focus on community service, including Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, The Links, Incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.  She also works with the Community Advisory Group for The Tulsa Campaign Against Teen Pregnancy.
