World-Renowned African American Art Exhibit Opening At Gathering Place And Greenwood Cultural Center This Week

Gathering Place and Greenwood Cultural Center invite you to two private media events for the opening of The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection on Friday, May 21. This is one of the largest and most prestigious African American art and history collections in the world, and it includes a wide range of artifacts from books, documents, photography, paintings, fine art, to personal belongings that chronicle the story of African American achievements from 1595 to present day. Please attend both media events for exclusive interview access to the Kinsey family and up-close previews of the pieces on display at each location. The exhibit is free for the public to see beginning May 22 through June 27, 2021, in the ONEOK Boathouse at Gathering Place and at Greenwood Cultural Center.

Join Mr. Bernard Kinsey, Mrs. Shirley Kinsey, Khalil Kinsey and members of the Greenwood Cultural Center for a first look of the collection, which includes first edition copies of books by Booker T. Washington, Phillis Wheatley, and W.E.B. Dubois, as well as other influential artifacts from African American history that can only be seen in historic Greenwood District.

Mr. Bernard Kinsey, Mrs. Shirley Kinsey, Khalil Kinsey, and influential members of the Tulsa arts community will celebrate the opening of one of the largest and most prestigious African American art and history collections in the world right here in Tulsa. About The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection and Foundation  

The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection and Foundation is one of the preeminent institutions dedicated to the research, interpretation, and presentation of the African American experience internationally. The Kinsey African American Art and History Collection has been on national tour since 2007 in effort to increase public awareness about African American history and culture. More than 15 million people have seen the national award-winning exhibit on display at institutes around the world including the University of Hong Kong Museum and Gallery, the California Africa American Museum, EPCOT-Walt Disney World, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

This is the first time the Kinsey African American Art and History Collection is on exhibit in Oklahoma. Its debut is made possible by Gathering Place in collaboration with the Greenwood Cultural Center.
