Homes Wanted…National Adoption Awareness Month

By admin • Nov 11th, 2008 • Category: Society

One Church One Child of Oklahoma (OCOC) is a special nationally recognized recruitment program designed to find parents for children, in particular African-American children. OCOC provides an organized method of reaching out to the local community through the churches to explain the adoption and foster care needs of children. The Oklahoma program, in its 20th year, is modeled after OCOC of Illinois, which was founded in 1980 by a Catholic priest in Chicago. OCOC is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Division of Child Welfare and governed by an interdenominational Board of Directors.

Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) was inspired to assist adoption agencies aggressively by recruiting adoptive families. WWK was created to transition the thousands of children out of foster care and into adoptive families. WWK is the first national program that partners a major corporation with a national foundation and local communities to place foster care children in permanent homes. Currently, child welfare specialists are limited in time and resources to both ensure the safety of the children under their care and actively recruit adoptive families for children waiting to be adopted.
The Dave Thomas Foundation for adoption provides funds to staff Recruiters throughout the United States.  OCOC was designated the WWK Recruiter position in July 2006.  The Recruiter dedicates 100 percent of his or her efforts securing qualified adoptive families.

Together these entities are focusing their efforts towards November’s National Adoption Awareness Month, in hope of speaking to you on behalf of the more than 500,000 children in the U.S. foster care system.  Nearly 119,000 children have the goal of being adopted. In Oklahoma, there are nearly 12,000 children in foster care, and approximately 2,600 of these children have a goal of adoption.
